Science
At our school, we aim to inspire curiosity, encourage exploration, and develop a secure understanding of scientific concepts in all pupils. Our science curriculum is structured using the Plymouth Science scheme, which provides a clear and coherent progression of knowledge and skills from Early Years through to Key Stage 2.
The Plymouth Science approach ensures that pupils build substantive knowledge alongside disciplinary knowledge, enabling them not only to know more, but also to think and work like scientists. Lessons are carefully sequenced to develop understanding over time, with opportunities to revisit and build upon prior learning. Key scientific vocabulary is explicitly taught and reinforced, allowing pupils to communicate their ideas with increasing accuracy and confidence.
Working scientifically is at the heart of our curriculum. Pupils are given regular opportunities to ask questions, plan and carry out investigations, observe closely, gather and record data, and draw conclusions based on evidence. Through practical enquiry, children develop critical thinking skills and learn to approach problems systematically.
We are committed to ensuring that science is accessible to all learners. Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of every pupil, with appropriate support and challenge provided. Practical experiences and enriching activities are carefully planned to deepen understanding rather than simply engage, ensuring that all activities have a clear learning focus.
By fostering a sense of wonder and encouraging inquisitive thinking, we aim to develop pupils who are confident in their scientific knowledge and eager to explore the world around them. Our goal is to equip children with the skills and understanding they need to succeed in science and to appreciate its importance in everyday life.
