Earlham Primary School

Maths

At our school, we are committed to developing confident, resilient mathematicians who can apply their knowledge and skills across a range of contexts. Our mathematics curriculum is carefully structured using the White Rose Maths scheme, ensuring clear progression, coherence, and depth of understanding for all pupils.

White Rose Maths supports a mastery approach, where children are encouraged to explore concepts in depth before moving on. Lessons are designed to build small, connected steps in learning, enabling pupils to develop a secure and flexible understanding of mathematical concepts. We place a strong emphasis on the use of mathematical language, reasoning, and problem-solving, ensuring that pupils can explain their thinking clearly and justify their answers.

Our teaching is also informed by evidence from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). This includes the use of high-quality questioning, explicit instruction, and carefully sequenced learning to reduce cognitive load. We recognise the importance of prior knowledge and ensure that key concepts are revisited regularly to strengthen retention through Flashback Four at the start of every lesson. Misconceptions are identified and addressed promptly, allowing all pupils to make sustained progress.

Concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations are used throughout the curriculum to support understanding. Pupils first explore concepts using practical resources, then move to visual representations, and finally to more abstract methods. This approach ensures that all learners, including those with additional needs, can access and succeed in mathematics.

We are dedicated to ensuring that all pupils experience success in mathematics. Through adaptive teaching, timely interventions, and targeted support, we aim to close gaps and provide appropriate challenge for every child. Opportunities for reasoning and problem-solving are embedded in every lesson, encouraging pupils to think deeply and apply their learning in a variety of contexts.

By fostering a positive attitude towards mathematics and promoting perseverance, we aim to equip our pupils with the skills and confidence they need to succeed both in school and beyond.
