History

At our school, we aim to develop pupils’ understanding of the past and how it has shaped the world we live in today. Our history curriculum is structured using the Haringey Education Partnership Opening Worlds programme, which provides a carefully sequenced and knowledge-rich approach to learning.

The Opening Worlds curriculum is designed to build pupils’ understanding of significant historical periods, events, and individuals through a coherent and chronological framework. Pupils develop a secure body of substantive knowledge, while also learning how historians study the past. This includes understanding sources, interpreting evidence, and recognising how historical narratives are constructed.

Lessons are carefully structured to support long-term learning, with key knowledge revisited and built upon over time. Pupils are introduced to ambitious historical vocabulary, which is explicitly taught and regularly reinforced to support clear and accurate communication. Through this approach, children are able to make meaningful connections across different periods and civilisations.

Our curriculum places strong emphasis on developing disciplinary knowledge. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions, analyse sources, and consider different perspectives. They learn to understand concepts such as cause and consequence, continuity and change, and similarity and difference, enabling them to think critically about the past.

By fostering curiosity about the past and a deeper understanding of historical events and societies, we aim to equip pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to become thoughtful, informed citizens.
